From the Desk of Father Jason - February 1, 2026
Dear Saint Francis Xavier Parishioners,
Today I would like to give you a preview of Lent. Lent is not too far away. Ash Wednesday is February 18, 2026. Ash Wednesday Masses will be at 7:30 am, noon, and 6:30 pm.
First, let us talk about fasting and abstinence. Each Catholic is asked to preserve the penitential purpose of Lent. Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent, and Good Friday. In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday until they celebrate their 59th birthday are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are bound by this regulation may only eat one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
Second, Catholics are to go to the sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession at least once a year. This is the second precept of the Church. Because Lent is a penitential season it makes sense to come to the Sacrament during this time. We will have additional Confession times on Tuesdays in Lent at 5 pm. This is in addition to Confession on Saturdays at 8 am and 3 pm. There will be a communal Lenten Penance Service with four priests on Thursday, March 26 at 6 pm.
Third, Soup and Stations of the Cross are back. This will be every Friday during Lent starting on February 20 at 5:30 pm.
Fourth, we will be having a five-week Bible study called “No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion.” We will be offering two times a week on Tuesday, 8:15 am and 6:30 pm.
Fifth, we have ordered the “Little Black Books,” a Lenten daily devotional. Please pick one up and pray with it.
Lent can be a great time to grow in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Take advantage of what St. Francis Xavier is offering. Start planning now.
Sincerely through Jesus,
Fr. Jason
